BESIDE THE BEACH, A POEM BY RIDWANULLAH SAKARIYAH

Beside the beach of a countryside
Was a seabird singing songs of cold
It looked up at the sky and said;
Nothing I see but something hinterland.”

Above the sea was a group of sailors
Beneath were unkind living creatures:
sharks, crocodiles, whales and all sorts
Keen to devour within a glimpse

And mindless eating up even with blood
For with them, they turn out big and
Their skins came out gleaming
“Don’t dare mess with us” they seem to sing.

“Oh, what a wicked world!”
Exclaimed the seabird.
“God, why bring me to this world?”
The world is full of whimsical rulers and pitiful ruled.

O you my country Nigeria, behold!
To you, I have come unblamed
You’re embedded with unchaste minds
Shall I have my stay or my ways?

For you built a garden of corruption
Because there was no cooperation
All you need is a gradual transformation
Just like other nations’ missions.
